The Journey so far.
Where do we begin? In a hole in the ground there lived a... No, not that far back! In 2024 while working at the Canterbury Punting Company, I would look across the bridge at Binnewith Island. At the time, left to nature, with brambles and nettles up to the gate, the land at the time was not accessible. I am an actor by profession, and have spent a fair number of years performing in Touring and Outdoor Theatre. Wistfully looking at the area during breaks between boating tours, I would think about the opportunity it could provide as a theatre venue of its own, having played similar spaces in tours...but not in Canterbury. It also felt like an opportunity to provide actors with a performing day job.
After speaking to the owner of the land, who was keen to champion a community, culture driven plan, I began to clear the weeds, nettles, and brambles, to reclaim the spot.
After a year and a half, with the support of some wonderful people on the ground, by GoFundMe donations, and advice, we're ready to go! We present, Binnewith Island Theatre!
